Loro Lugaro said that in view of his intimate connection

with the foundation of Hung Kung University and with its early

stages, he was keenly interested in its financial problems of

which he was well aware, and in full sympatny with its

development on the Chinese side. which from its inception had

been one of its chief desiderata. He considered that in VIEW

of the bearing of such schemes on Brition relations with the

Chinese Empire, the Colony might reasonably expect substantial

nelp from outside. Though no sam nu ubjection to the question

nc

of an appeal to the general public ceing referred to the

Pavisory Committee, ne did not think that their backing would

lead to substantial results in this country. Nor nad ne ɛný

expectation of any substantial results from such an appeal, for

there really was no money available at the present time for

such purposes in this country.

He suggested that in the first instance the possibility

of support from Malaya should to explorea. In any case the

aims and needs of Hong nong should be burne in mina when ine

future development of haffles College was discussed. in this

connection it was fortunate that the present Governor of the

Straits Settlements knew and sympathized with the needs of the

Hong Kong University, and that the late Chief Secretary of the

F.M.S. was Governor Designate for Hong Kong.

Lora Lugard will discuss the situation with Sir Laurence

Guillemera, and also find out whether the Chinese University

Committee, which for some time has been dormant, can do

anytning. He is alresay in correspondence with Sir Cecil

Clementi and has spoken recently to Lord Passfield as to.the possibility of increasing the donation from the Boxer.
